The Mendon Democratic Committee will be in Mendon Ponds Park on Saturday April 20 to help Monroe County “Pick Up the Parks.” Committee members will join Monroe County school classes, scout troops, churches, civic organizations and individual residents in the county’s annual spring clean-up program.
Organized by the Monroe County Parks Department, Pick Up The Parks leverages community support with county resources to clean up the parks’ winter accumulation of trash and debris; reduce litter that enters our local waterways, and get the parks looking great for spring and summer! Volunteers will be asked to pitch in to pick up trash and litter, rake sticks and leaves, clear the grounds and walk ways, sweep out shelters or lodges, and help out with weeding and mulching.
Barring extreme weather (can we imagine 3 feet of snow in April?), the event will be held rain or shine.
The National Parks Service notes that Mendon Ponds Park, which covers more than 2,600 acres, is unique among glacial landmarks because of its complex of features, including kames, eskers, esker fans, kettle holes, erratics, bogs, and ponds.
The Park is known locally for its year-round schedule of recreational activities; from sledding and cross country skiing in winter to running, biking, picnicking and strolling about in summer. Kathleen Cook, Chair of the Mendon Democratic Committee, noted Mendon Ponds Park is “a local treasure.”
